Current USDA Direct Loan Rate



Eligible borrowers include public bodies, community-based non-profit corporations, and federally recognized tribes. Rural areas with no more than 20,000 residents, according to the latest U.S. Census Data, are eligible.


The terms for a direct loan as set by the USDA are:

  • Permanent financing only. Construction financing must be sourced separately.
  • The loan repayment terms are a maximum of 40 years.
  • Interest rates are set by Rural Development quarterly.
  • The interest rate is fixed for the entire term of the loan at the lower of the rate in effect at the time of approval or when the loan is funded.
  • There are no prepayment penalties.

Additional Requirements

Additionally, the USDA requires that:

  • Applicants must have legal authority to borrow money, obtain security, repay loans, construct, operate, and maintain the proposed facilities
  • Facilities must serve the rural area where they are/will be located
  • Project must demonstrate substantial community support
